The Gold Cup is the regional championship that crowns the best national team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean region (CONCACAF). The tournament is held every two years and Mexico is the defending champion.
The 2021 edition is being held in the USA with 16 participating countries, including special guest team and reigning Asian champion Qatar. The 16 teams were split into four groups; the top two finishers in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The knockout matches will play out through to the final on Aug. 1.
A preliminary round was held July 2-6, from which Trinidad & Tobago, Haiti and Guadeloupe advanced to the group stage. Curacao was forced to withdraw a day before the tournament after an outbreak of positive COVID-19 tests. Guatemala, the highest-ranked team from those eliminated in the preliminary round, took its place.

Gold Cup 2021: Tournament format
The Gold Cup tournament unfolds in a similar fashion to other continental tournaments around the world, with a group stage followed by knockout rounds:
Group stage: The 16 national teams are split into four groups. Each team will play three matches as part of round-robin competition. The top two finishers in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Knockout rounds: The eight teams that advance from the group stage are paired in predetermined quarterfinal matchups based on their finish in the group. A fixed bracket of single-elimination quarterfinal and semifinal matches will leave two teams standing for the final on Sunday, Aug. 1, in Las Vegas.
