Ben Chilwell has singled out Edouard Mendy for praise, despite scoring the winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 triumph at Brentford on Saturday night. Mendy’s heroics ensured the visitors kept a clean sheet in a tough test against Thomas Frank’s resilient side.
Thomas Tuchel gave Chilwell the nod over Marcos Alonso after the 24-year-old scored his first England goal during the international break.
He then repaid the German manager’s faith by firing Chelsea ahead on the brink of half-time.
The Blues had to hold on after the break as Brentford’s momentum grew and Tuchel’s defensive rotation started to show.
But Mendy produced an incredible display to maintain the lead, making six saves, five of which came from shots inside the box.
The Senegalese stopper was named Man of the Match as Chelsea returned to the top of the Premier League.
After full-time, Chilwell heaped praise on Mendy for his contribution to the victory at the Brentford Community Stadium.
He told Sky Sports: “We’ve got Edou [Mendy] to thank for the last 20 minutes, some goalkeeper.
“We see it every day in training, and he’s getting the credit he deserves; he makes big saves and gets us the three points in the end.”
