While most other Porsche prices have increased recently, the Porsche 996 can be had for under £20,000.

The entry-level model had a 300bhp 3.4 litre flat-six engine, fed through either an automatic or a six-speed manual box.

This car costs approximately £12,000, but Autocar found one with just 57,000 miles for £19,700.

Another good option is the BMW 140i, which costs approximately £17,500.

And the engine is very similar to the old M135i – capacity was upped from 2979cc to 2998cc, with power at 335bhp.

The experts also recommend buying a second-hand Jaguar XKR, which can reach a speed of 155.4mph.

A 1996 Jaguar XKR can be bought for around £10,000.

The R version’s supercharger raises the 4.2’s power to 420bhp, and the 5.0’s to 503bhp.

There are many ways to break the 150mph barrier on the autobahn, and one of the cheapest options is the Lexus LS430, which can be found for £8,995.

Drivers can get a 2001 Mercedes CL500 C215 for £6,000 – and this car can hit a claimed 168mph.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG was regarded to have one of the best V8 engines ever produced by the German car maker.

Its top speed was limited to 155mph, but it’s said that the C63 would hit 186mph if derestricted – you can find one with 77,000 miles for £17,000.

In the 1990s, the Fiat Coupe was considered one of the most iconic sports cars.

The 20v Turbo was the most popular as its 2.0-litre five-cylinder powerplant produced 220bhp and 228 lb-ft of torque.

This means it could reach 60mph in just 6.4 seconds.
