Cabinet nod to new scholarship scheme for OBC, EBC students – Times of India

PATNA: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to introduce a new state-sponsored scholarship scheme for other backward castes (OBC) and extremely backward caste (EBC) students, which will replace a centrally sponsored scheme for the same.
The cabinet also approved Rs30,000 monthly raise in the ministers’ allowances to bring it on par with the MLAs. The allowances for MLAs were also hiked recently.
Besides, Rs500 crore has been sanctioned to the urban development and housing department (UDHD) for paying pending electricity bills due to the urban local bodies (ULBs).
The cabinet also gave its nod to developing the famous Simaria Ghat riverfront in Begusarai.
Sharing details of the new scholarship scheme, a cabinet minister told TOI: “Under the centrally sponsored scholarship scheme for OBC and EBC students, the central government initially used to give 100%. Later, the Centre changed it to 60:40. The Centre further put a cap on its contribution in the scheme, which virtually brought down its contribution to around 20%.”
In view of the gradual reduction in the Centre’s share, CM Nitish Kumar decided to come up with a state-funded scholarship in its place. “Earlier, the scholarship scheme for OBC/EBC students came under the social welfare department. But the new scheme will be under the purview of the education department. The scholarship amount will be credited to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer,” he said.
With regard to Simaria riverfront development, the minister said the project entails the construction of a pucca ladder ghat, beautification and development of various facilities for devotees in the Kalpwas Mela area. In November 2022, CM Nitish visited the Kalpwas Mela at Simariya Dham and took feedback from the saints and seers and reviewed the proposal of the water resources department while seeking a detailed plan for the development of the area.
