BT, Sky and Virgin users must check their Wi-Fi today or risk broken broadband

‌Britain is going to bask in some of the hottest weather of the year so far. And whilst that’s great for getting out the BBQ and topping up the tan it’s not such good news for your Wi-Fi. Like most modern gadgets, including smartphones and tablets, the router that blasts broadband around your home really doesn’t like the heat.

In fact, placing that little flashing black box on the widow ledge or in direct sunlight could bring your broadband to a shuddering halt.

When tech devices get too hot they will often shut down to stop any damage occurring and they won’t start working again until things have cooled back down again.

This means many homes could be left without the internet if they don’t make sure their routers are positioned somewhere nice and cool.

Virgin Media is just one Internet Service Provider (ISP) that is telling users to check their equipment. In a recent email, the firm said: “Always keep it indoors in a cool place and out of bright sunlight to prevent it from overheating.”

If you suddenly find your router is smoking hot, it might be a good idea to switch it off, move it, let the tempertaure reduce, then turn things back on again.

Along with keeping things cool, there are other top tips for making sure your broadband stays up to speed including making sure the router is in the middle of the home and up off the floor. This gives the signal the best chance of whizzing to every room.

Don’t tuck it behind the telly, don’t leave it near the fish tank (Wi-Fi hates water) and make sure you give it a quick reboot once in a while to clear up any issues.

One thing to remember is that rebooting the router can take up to 10 minutes so make sure nobody is online or in the middle of an important Zoom call before tapping the off switch.
