Britons could cut NHS prescription costs by up to £340 a year

Britons who use a PPC can save up to £340 a year. It is effectively a prescription “season ticket”.

Currently, there are 15 groups of people that qualify for free prescriptions, however, most people need to pay prescription charges.

The price of medication has been frozen at £9.35 per item in England, so for those who need multiple medications each month, this number could add up.

Experts have said that people can save upwards of £340 if they are in receipt of multiple prescriptions.

A PPC covers all NHS prescriptions, including NHS dental prescriptions, no matter how many items someone needs.

However, it does not cover the cost of other health items, such as the provision of wigs and fabric supports, which are only provided through the hospital service.

There are two PPC options that people can choose from.

The three-month PPC costs £30.25 and could save someone money if they need more than three prescribed items in three months.

The 12-month PPC costs £108.10 and could save someone money if they need more than 11 prescribed items in a year.

DON’T MISS

Some pharmacies may be able to sell individuals a PPC. They will not be able to pay by direct debit if they buy a PPC at a pharmacy.

Britons should contact their local pharmacy to find out if they sell PPCs.

Alternatively they can view the list of registered pharmacies on the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA) website to find which ones sell PPCs.

In Scotland and Wales, people are able to claim their medication for free no matter what age they are.
