Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel forgotten roles in Corrie, EastEnders and The Bill

Golda Rosheuvel stars as Queen Charlotte in Netflix’s hit period drama Bridgerton, alongside the likes of Phoebe Dynevor, Regé-Jean Page and Jonathan Bailey. But even if you weren’t one of the 82 million people to watch the drama, you might recognise her other TV appearances.

While it was her role in Bridgerton that saw he shoot to fame in 2020, she already had credits on some of the biggest shows on UK TV. Golda has appeared in The Bill, Casualty, Luther, Coronation Street and EastEnders.

Golda, 52, was born in Guyana and her dad with Guyanese while her mum was English. She told Broadway World: “I come from a very musical family: we’ve always sung, my father played instruments, my Mum was in an orchestra, my brother too. So it’s in the blood, I suppose!”

She has more than 20 years of acting experience with an extensive history in the theatre including in productions such as Macbeth, Othello an Jesus Christ Superstar. Alongside her theatre work, in 2005 she appeared on The Bill and then in 2011 she played Sally Thomas in Luther, starring Idris Elba.

In 2012 she appeared on Coronation Street as Doctor Renshaw, who was based at Weatherfield General and in charge of Sally Webster’s care when she was admitted to the hospital in March 2012. Then in 2015 she played Midwife Jenni in EastEnders, delivering Linda Carter’s baby.

After many smaller roles, she finally got her big break in Bridgerton when she was cast in 2019. After getting the role she spoke to Page Six reflecting on representation in Hollywood and playing Queen Charlotte.

“For a long time now stories had been told by the privileged,” she said. “And I think it’s time that the door has opened and the time is now that the door is being opened by people of colour, black and brown people.

“To be able to create the space where you can have a black queen in the highest-watched period drama on Netflix, you can have that to be able to break down the boundaries to make the space for black and brown people to be in a lavish, sexy, scandalous, beautiful representation of life.

“There’s not a lot of us around who are gay, female, black and I’m very privileged and blessed to be one of them.”
