This couple had a very different first dance than expected at their wedding, after the groom came down with severe food poisoning and had to miss out.

Rather than call it a day, bride Christine Karmire hooked up an iPad to a mannequin, using a picture of husband Gannon on the tablet so he could be part of it.

The Victorian, the wedding venue in Youngsville, North Carolina, shared a TikTok video of Christine dancing with the mannequin at her wedding.

The post explained how Gannon had been rushed to hospital with ‘severe’ food poisoning on the big day, which led to their marital McGuyver moment.

‘When the groom suddenly becomes sick and goes to the hospital on wedding day,’ read the caption on the video, which has now been viewed over 888,000 times.

Although Gannon couldn’t physically enjoy the reception, Christine tried to make the best of it, making her stand-in groom from garment steamer dressed in a suit, before topping with an iPad featuring a picture of Gannon on the screen.

Guests snapped selfies of the substitute Gannon, which Christine wheeled around while cutting the wedding cake and dancing.

The real Gannon was understandably sad to miss the festivities, but made a full recovery and thanked The Victorian for their help.

Commenting on the venue’s post, he explained how this event was a belated reception, as the couple got officially married in July last year. It was their third attempt to celebrate their marriage with family and friends, after the pandemic put a stop to previous plans.

He wrote: ‘Due to other attempts and hospital regulations – and hopes of me returning for the ceremony – I wanted her to stay with friends and family.’

Some of the many commenters on The Victorian’s video weren’t exactly understanding about the nightmare scenario.

‘”In sickness and in health” at its finest,’ sarcastically said one, while another wrote, ‘This is funny, but I’d probably be at the hospital with him.’

However, there were others that understood the couple’s predicament, with one commenting: ‘Awww this is sweet/ They made the best of it. When you get food poisoning you don’t want no one around. It’s the worst.’

And despite their bad luck, Christine and Gannon aren’t letting detractors get to them.

‘We’ve happily been together for almost 8 years, with many more to come,’ said the groom (the real one, not the iPad contraption).
