Blue Jays acquire Whit Merrifield from Royals

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired second baseman/outfielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals.

Merrifield, 33, was an all-star for the second time last season, leading the majors with 42 doubles and the American League with 40 stolen bases. He was unable to travel to Toronto to face the Blue Jays in July due to his vaccination status.

Headed back to Kansas City are prospect Samad Taylor and right-hander Max Castillo. Taylor, 24, was the Jays’ No. 16 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The second baseman was playing with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. Castillo, 24, appeared in nine games for the Jays this season, starting in two of them, and had a 3.05 ERA.

Toronto also bullpen arms Anthony Bass and Zach Pop from the Miami Marlins and right-hander Mitch White along with infield prospect Alex De Jesus from the Los Angeles Dodgers. They sent pitcher Jeremy Beasley to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash and announced that left-hander Andrew Vasquez has been claimed by the Philadelphia Phillies.
