Blood clot sidelines Cleary from another game

Ivan Cleary will sit out another Panthers game on Saturday after giving an update on the condition that hospitalised the premiership coach.

Nine’s Danny Weidler reports that the blood clot that first appeared in the Panthers mentor’s leg had travelled to his lungs, complicating the health issues that have forced Cleary out of the coach’s box several times this season.

Cleary has been ordered by doctors not to travel in a plane, which is what’s preventing him from getting to the club’s away clash against the Warriors in Redcliffe on Saturday.

“I kind of broached the idea of getting in a car … but I think 20 hours in a car’s not going to help me either at the moment,” Cleary, who is out of hospital and on crutches, told 9News.

“I’ve done, I don’t know, 300-odd games (as a first grade coach) and not missed any and this is the fourth one I’m missing this year, so, I don’t like watching it on TV.”

Despite Cleary’s semi-regular absence from games in 2022, the Panthers sit four points clear at the top of the table and are red hot favourites to take care of the struggling Warriors.

Round 15 kicks off with the Rabbitohs visiting the Dragons at WIN Stadium in Wollongong on Thursday night.
