Black Widow Writer Doesn’t Have ‘Easy Answer’ How Winter Soldier/Hawkeye Love Triangle Should End

Black Widow writer Kelly Thompson says there’s no easy answer as to whether Natasha Romanoff should end up with Hawkeye or the Winter Soldier.

Marvel fans have often debated whether Natasha Romanoff should end up romantically paired off with either Hawkeye or the Winter Soldier, but Black Widow writer Kelly Thompson doesn’t think there’s any kind of simple solution to the love triangle.

When speaking with Marvel, Thompson was asked what added dimension having two exes — Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes — as part of Romanoff’s inner circle gives the Black Widow character. “I love that Winter Soldier and Hawkeye draw different things out of Natasha,” Thompson answered. “It’s hard for me to pair her off with either of them romantically because I value the depth of their bonds together — all of them — that level of friendship and devotion even feels more intense to me than just ‘romantic love.’ In the end, Natasha needs both of these men, and I think they need her. But there’s no easy answer to pairing anyone off in this scenario… which makes for good stories, but I know as a fan can also be frustrating.”

Speaking further about Romanoff’s inner circle, Thompson said she very carefully selected an arrangement of characters for Black Widow to interact with throughout the series. “As anyone that reads my work knows, I like to build a strong supporting cast around a headlining character — but in Natasha’s case, after her loss, she was literally trying to build herself a new family. She didn’t do it consciously, but it is what she did, especially in how she tried to protect Lucy [Nguyen] from her dangerous world and give her some choices that a younger Natasha didn’t have. But Nat was conscious of needing to not go all lone-wolf after what happened to her. When Yelena Belova decided to stay beside her in issue #5 — that was huge for Nat. Yelena knew Nat needed her but it was basically left unsaid between them. I love that.”

While Romanoff’s relationship with both Barnes and Barton is purely platonic in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic runs have depicted her as having romantic interests for both characters in the past. In the 2020 series, Romanoff is initially engaged to a man named James Grey. The two also have an artificially engineered son named Stevie. After a failed assassination attempt, James and Stevie fake their deaths and move to a different location away from Romanoff with help from Barnes.

Thompson’s Black Widow began in 2020 and sees the titular spy put uncover new secrets about her past while protecting San Francisco from villains like Apogee, the Twins and others. Black Widow #15 — which comes from Thompson, Rafael Pimentel and Elena Casagrande, with cover art by Adam Hughes — promises a conclusion to the four-part “Die by the Blade” storyline, which sees Romanoff go up against a dangerous assassin known as the Living Blade.

Black Widow #15 releases on April 6 from Marvel Comics.
