Black Widow Just Saved the MCU’s Newest Breakout Star

One of Black Widow’s allies just came up with a shocking way to save a friend that just might invite deadly consequences in the long run.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Black Widow #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Black Widow’s recent solo debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw longtime comic book fan-favorite Yelena Belova make her own memorable jump to the MCU too. Unfortunately, things aren’t going nearly as well for her in Black Widow #9 by Kelly Thompson, Elena Casagrande, Rafael De LaTorre, Elisabetta D’ Amico, Jordie Bellaire, and VC’s Cory Petit. Things are so bad, in fact, that even Natasha Romanoff is powerless to help. Luckily, her new superpowered sidekick, Lucy, is a bit better suited for the task at hand, and she’s just brought Yelena back from the brink.

Natasha’s ongoing mission to dismantle the villainous Apogee’s superpowered cult has landed her right in the line of fire alongside her closest allies, and Yelena Belova has paid the ultimate price for it. After one of Apogee’s henchmen fried Yelena’s brain with an electric blast, Natasha was left mourning for her friend and fighting for her life at the same time. The Widows weren’t the only ones who had leapt headlong into the fray, however, as Natasha’s new ward Lucy had followed them back to Apogee’s cult. Although she hasn’t proven herself especially capable in the field so far, Lucy’s tenacity proves to know no bounds when she decides to unleash her own electric powers directly into Yelena’s chest in a last-ditch attempt to save her life.

Shockingly, the plan pays off, bringing Yelena back to life with a single blinding flash. Even if Lucy’s appearance on the battlefield itself doesn’t go particularly appreciated by either Widow, both are grateful for her rescue of Yelena.

For as long as Lucy has been under Natasha’s wing, the young woman has shown a fierce dedication to striking back at Apogee. Now she has done just that in the most unexpected way possible by putting the powers bestowed upon her by him to undo at least some of the damage he has wrought. It’s a far cry from the way in which the villain had previously planned to weaponize the young woman, and if Lucy’s own journey to becoming a hero wasn’t actively killing her it might even be inspiring.

Black Widow Yelena Recovery

Like the rest of the members of Apogee’s cult who have gained powers thanks to the villain’s mysterious serum, Lucy’s use of her own is poised to be the exact thing that kills her. The last of Apogee’s followers who fell into the Widow’s web was quite literally consumed by his own abilities right before her very eyes, melting away into a gruesome puddle where once there stood a person.

Assuming the heroes can manage to find a cure for Lucy’s condition before she is burned up entirely by her own electrifying abilities, Black Widow’s protege could very well be shaping up to be Marvel’s next great hero.
