BJP Kisan Morcha to meet this month end to discuss farmers protest

The BJP’s frontal organisation for farmers plans to devise a strategy to reach out to farmers in poll-bound states at a meeting planned this month end. The meeting will discuss the impact of farmers’ agitation and other crucial issues related to agriculture.

The BJP Kisan Morcha national executive will be held on October 30, with new office bearers, and see participation from all states. BJP organisation general secretary BL Santhosh, agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and party chief JP Nadda are expected to attend the meeting.

While the impact of farmers’ protest on elections would be discussed, issues such as increase in costs of farming, rise in price of diesel, short supply and black marketing of fertilisers, seen in states such as MP, are also likely to be raised. The volatile political situation in Haryana due to farmers’ discontent, Lakhimpur Kheri violence and its impact, return of migrant workers to farming, leading to drop in farm incomes are other issues.

“The agriculture sector was largely exempted from Covid-19 curbs, but farmers were hit by labour shortage, fluctuating demand, poor prices and transportation hurdles. We will tell leaders what the ground situation is like,” a senior morcha functionary said.

BJP Kisan Morcha national head and Fatehpur Sikri MP RK Chahar told ET that the organisation will discuss ways to ensure that central benefits reach the farmers. RSS affiliate BKS national secretary Mohini Mohan Mishra said the government should look at the 2018 export policy and develop 22,000 agricultural haats across the country.
