Bennett twist looming after big hint on future

Rugby league supercoach Wayne Bennett won’t rush into a decision on his future in the game, and says he will consult with South Sydney before making any definitive move.

Bennett coached the Rabbitohs for the last time in Sunday’s 14-12 loss to Penrith.

He will hand the reins to his long-time assistant, Jason Demetriou, who will take control of the Bunnies when they return for pre-season ahead of 2022.

For Bennett, though, he is very much unemployed and on the market.

He’s been heavily linked to coaching the NRL’s expansion team but they won’t be in the competition until 2023 at the earliest, so Bennett has at least a year before starting that job.

The Rabbitohs reportedly want him to stay on at the burrow in some capacity, just not as head coach.

Bennett was asked about his future after the heartbreaking grand final loss.

“I’ve made no choices yet. I’ve told you a thousand times, when I know what the plan is I’ll let you know,” he said.

“There’s something formulating in my mind but I don’t know what it is yet.

“I have a number of options on the table and I don’t know what I’ll do or won’t do right now.

“Today is not a good day, and tomorrow will not be a good day with the state of mind I’ll be in to make decisions about my future.

‘They’ve been penalties all year’

“I’ll sit on it for a couple of weeks.

“I respect Souths enormously, what they’ve done for me… I won’t do anything without talking to Souths first and foremost, and we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Bennett is considered one of the best rugby league coaches the game has ever seen and at 71 he continues to succeed.

He said the result of the thrilling decider will have no bearing on the decision he makes next.
