BBC Radio 1’s Adele Roberts breaks silence on replacement as she leaves show

Adele Roberts has sent her support for the DJs who will be replacing her on BBC Radio 1 after eight years at the broadcaster.

The 44-year-old DJ stepped down from the show in May after joining the network in 2012.

Her departure follows her battle with bowel cancer after being diagnosed in 2021.

Instead of being sad about her leaving, she celebrated her new replacements Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston.

She posted to her 70,000 followers: “This is wonderful news. Congratulations Sam & Danni! I am so happy for you both.

“So very well deserved and I cannot wait to listen to the new show. xx.”

Her fans commented on her departure, with one sharing: “Gonna miss you on radio 1! I’ve been part of the EMC for years and really enjoyed listening to you on early breakfast over the years and on your other shows! Best wishes for the future Adele!!”

Another replied: “You are missed!! Thanks for everything you did on the weekend breakfast show, you are so lovely and inspirational.”

One fan added that Adele should return for one final show: “Hope you’re ok though you should really come back for a final show and proper send off :).”

The DJ has spoken openly about her treatment for stage two bowel cancer and last June revealed she was free from the disease.

The I’m A Celeb star shared on Instagram that it was “the day I’ve been waiting for” and the news “took my breath away”.

Adele added: “Everything we’ve been through seems to be swirling around in my body and life feels a bit surreal at the moment.

“But I am so grateful! I am counting my blessings.”

Earlier this week, she shared a photo of herself before going into surgery for an operation on her colon.

The Big Brother star posted: “Monday morning op. EUA RECTUM AND DILATION OF ANASTOMOTIC… (I think that means they’re going to put a balloon up my bum to sort out my kinky colon).

“Let’s see if we can get it working again. Let the dilation via balloon commence.”

Adele ended the caption by saying she would see fans “on the other side” with a fingers-crossed emoji.

The station announced the news yesterday regarding her departure: “After an incredible 8 years at Radio 1 Adele Roberts has decided to leave.

“She has been at the heart of some of Radio 1’s biggest projects but you’ll continue to hear her voice across the radio as she continues to be part of the BBC family.

“Thanks for everything @AdeleRoberts.”

Sam and Danni will co-host Saturdays and Sundays between 7am and 10am from Saturday September 9.
