Batman’s Son Damian Wayne Might Have a Hidden Superpower

Batman’s Son Damian Wayne Might Have a Hidden Superpower

A revelation brought to light in Robin #12 hints that Damian Wayne, the son of Batman and heir of Ra’s al Ghul, may actually have a hidden superpower.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Robin #12, on sale now from DC Comics.

The “Blood of the Demon” title has been bestowed upon Batman’s son Damian Wayne because of his connection to the villainous Ra’s al Ghul. New evidence has come to light in Robin #12 (by Joshua Williamson, Roger Cruz, Norm Rapmund, Luis Guerrero, ALW’s Troy Peteri) suggesting that this is more than just an epithet, but an actual indication of superhuman abilities.

Robin’s friend, Flatline, has secretly smuggled Damian Wayne’s heart into the hands of Lord Death Man, who stated that the young Robin’s blood is stronger than the Lazarus resin. If this is true, then Damian Wayne just might have a hidden superpower waiting to be unlocked.

The Lazarus resin is a refined version of the substance found in Ra’s al Ghul’s Lazarus pits. It can be used to restore people fully (or partially) to life and is even capable of enhancing a person’s physical capabilities. All of these traits make it a powerful tool, but it seems that Lord Death Man has grander ambitions in mind. He specifically sent Flatline to retrieve a vital organ from a descendant of Ra’s al Ghul, in the process gaining access to whatever strange properties his blood might possess.

There is actually a degree of precedence behind this. Ra’s had been exposing himself to the Lazarus pits long before Talia was born. There’s no telling what sort of physiological changes might have occurred in all that time, although the only visible effects thus far have been his rejuvenation and temporary mental instability. As the latest in the line of al Ghul, Damian could very well be the beneficiary of centuries of exposure on the part of his grandfather.

It’s no secret that Damian was dead for a stretch of time. Rather than repeat the mistakes of his forebearers, Batman opted for a different way to revive his son. To this end, the Dark Knight Detective charged an artifact known as the chaos crystal with Darkseid’s omega sanction, and used the combined power to revive his son. This process granted Damian temporary superpowers that were very similar to Superman’s. While his abilities faded over time, the power used to bring him back to life may have altered his blood in some unforeseen manner.

Going back to what Lord Death Man may want with the blood, the likely answer is that it possesses a regenerative agent that is stronger and perhaps even more stable than the Lazarus resin. This means that the blood of the youngest Robin might be capable of granting its inheritors a healing factor or perhaps even physical immortality. Adding to that is the possibility that the god-like power that revived Damian is still lying dormant somewhere within him, indicating that he may have the power to potentially change the DC Universe forever.
