WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf In Gotham #2, on sale now.

Batman is no stranger to facing supernatural beings, having faced immortal madmen, giant zombies, even literal gods. Despite that facing a fairytale character is strange, even for the Dark Knight. After capturing Bigby Wolf, Bruce Wayne took the opportunity to get some much-needed rest, only to be awakened by Alfred to discover that the Batcave had been torn to pieces. With the Batcave completely destroyed, Bigby was nowhere to be found. It didn’t exactly test the world’s greatest detective realize figure out who was responsible, However, this attack also fostered the growing respect between both Batman and Bigby, even if trust is hard to give here.

In Batman vs. Bigby! A Wolf In Gotham #2, by Bill Willingham, Brian Level, Jay Leisten, Lee Loughridge and Steve Wands, Alfred led Bruce into the Batcave, showing that almost every part of it had been trashed. At first assuming a bomb had gone off, Alfred mentioned hearing noises from the cave last night, but choosing not to investigate. However, Batman explained that away by noting that the sudden change in air pressure can cause disorientation, leading to irrational decision making. So clearly, Bigby had powers he wasn’t aware of and the devastation he wrought through the Batcave was more than enough proof of this. Long time Fables fans will of course, recognize that this destruction likely came courtesy of Bigby’s ability to exhale air with the force of a hurricane, a trait he inherited from his father, the North Wind.

In addition to showing Batman his true power with this attack, Bigby later proved that keep up with Batman on an instinctual level. Having picked up Batman’s scent, Bigby was able to deduce that Bruce Wayne was really the Caped Crusader. This was a fact Bigby exploited to get a moment alone with Bruce, where he reasserted that he was innocent of the crimes Batman was investigating.

But Bigby was not to win Bruce over that night. He may be innocent of the crimes he’s being accused of, but Bruce still saw Bigby’s killer instinct. Whatever blood Bigby had on his hands was enough of a reason for Bruce to distrust him on principle alone. But even Bruce had to concede, Bigby’s quick deduction of who was behind the cowl caught Bruce off guard, especially since he implied that he could publicly unmask the Dark Knight in a room full of high society gossipers at any moment.

Still, Bruce was not one to remain on the defensive. He admitted Bigby caught him with his pants down, but he agreed to speak with the wolf to come up with a solution. The moment when Bigby might have had Bruce by the throat passed, and Batman was once again there to retake control of the situation, albeit with a newfound respect for the Fables star and his abilities.

Bigby has already done his own investigations into Batman, coming to the conclusion that the Dark Knight is a misguided force for good in Gotham, even if they’re enemies at the moment. He even mentioned that Batman gave him more trouble than the average human, which is high praise from someone capable of bringing down a building just by blowing some air.

Batman likewise can at least respect Bigby’s abilities even if he can’t trust him. Bigby not only managed to escape one of the most secure places in the DC Universe, but he also managed to unravel one of Gotham’s greatest secrets in just a few hours since. If nothing else, the foundation of their inevitable partnership will be based on respect for their accomplishments.
