Barclays is shutting 15 more branches leaving some Britons with nowhere to bank
Barclays is closing 15 more bank branches for good this year, taking the total that will shut this year to 132. The bank is blaming an increase in online banking for the decision as fewer people are relying on face-to-face help at a local branch.
The move will affect millions of Britons across the country from Corringham in Essex to Clitheroe in Lancashire.
Some 2,300 people on the Isle of Scilly have no bank branch at all and have to take a plane or ferry to do their banking on the mainland.
It’s not just Barclays who is closing branches – Lloyds, HSBC, TSB and NatWest have all closed branches this year.
This has resulted in more than 300 bank branches closing for good in 2022.

Consett
Gainsborough
Congleton
Leek
Holt
Morpeth
Totton
Corringham
Melton Mowbray
Tavistock
Clitheroe
Rickmansworth.
A Barclays spokesperson said: “We continue to review and adjust our branch footprint to ensure it reflects the way that our customers are increasingly choosing to do their banking.
“We will always give twelve weeks’ notice of any branch closures, explaining the rationale for the decision, as well as highlighting alternative branches and ways to bank.
“This includes working with the local community to find different, more flexible ways for our colleagues to continue to provide local banking support, such as through pop-up presences.”
This follows news the bank would be closing 27 of its sites just last month.
