Why look like a million bucks when you could look like you’re taking out last night’s takeaway in a bin bag?
Yes, black liner bags just got a whole lot more chic, thanks to Balenciaga.
The Spanish retailer has just launched the trash pouch… which is exactly what it sounds like.
You might mistake it for your bin liner, but this particular accessory comes with a hefty price tag, setting customers back by $1,700 (£1,469).
Doesn’t that sound like rubbish?
As a treat, the items come in three different colours – black, white and blue, topped with a red or grey lace to tie it together.
Balenciaga does have some self-awareness and knows how ridiculous this is.
Balenciaga’s creative director, Demna Gvasalia, told HypeBeast the bag was crafted to cause a stir, commenting: ‘I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?’
And can we really be surprised? These are the folks who designed Kim K’s all-black incognito look which could be said to resemble a certain household item…(put the trash pouch next to her and it’s uncanny).
In a recent couture show, they dressed Nicole Kidman in a foil-y silver number that also had a bin-bag feel to it.
People can’t take any of it seriously though. Many likened it to the satirical ‘Derelict’ range shown on the film Zoolander.
Others suggested Balenciaga was an experimental meme, given its recent sartorial offerings.
‘They’re definitely a social experiment,’ one Instagrammer commented.
Another added: ‘Balenciaga is a meme designer’ while one person said it wasn’t funny as ‘they’re really trying to make a joke out of the consumers at this point’.
