There are movies and teleseryes that enable performers to put food on the table and pay their monthly bills. But there are also projects that, while unapologetically “budget-friendly,” allow artists to go beyond what’s shallow or perfunctory. Some actors, particularly the theater-honed ones, refer to these nonincome-generating productions as “food for the soul.”
Award-winning Actress (AA) is no different. To join an eagerly awaited project for a small production team, AA made sure she wouldn’t spend more than necessary—sometimes, at the expense of her coactors!
Seasoned Performer (SP) told Rushes how shocked she was when she unwittingly became part of AA’s cost-effective approach to budget-friendly gigs. After one rehearsal, AA invited cast members who had no car to hitch a ride with her.
SP said she was initially moved by AA’s generosity and unexpected act of kindness.
But something “odd and amusing” happened on the way to their destination. AA told her passengers that she was running out of gas and needed to pass by the gasoline station. And so she did.
But SP and AA’s other passengers got the shock of their lives when AA showed them the receipt and asked everyone for their share of the “extra expense.” “Hati-hati tayo,” AA explained.
“I never accepted AA’s invitation again… Parang Grab sharing lang, right (laughs)?,” noted SP as she shook her head at the recollection. Oh well, para-paraan lang ‘yan.
