In Marvel’s epic two-parter event Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame Earth’s Mightiest Heroes set out to find the Infinity Stones. While most of them were easy enough to find, the Soul Stone posed a problem. Eventually, Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) took Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to the planet Vormir to figure out how to get it.
On this planet, it was revealed a sacrifice had to be made to acquire the mystical gem.
Marvel’s new Disney Plus show What If…? changed how this would have happened in an alternate timeline, however.
The TV show introduced a world where Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) did not become Captain America, but Peggy Carter instead took the super-soldier serum.
During this adventure, Captain Carter reclaimed the Tesseract from Red Skull (Hugo Weaving). When he later retrieved the Tesseract he opened up a portal to space, where a giant tentacled Cthulhu monster crushed him.

With Red Skull dead, he would not have been able to guard the Soul Stone on Vormir, as he did in Infinity War and Endgame.
In the original MCU timeline Red Skull was teleported by the Tesseract to Vormir, where he was enslaved by the gem.
He then became the keeper of the artifact, telling those who desire it just how to get it.
But, with Captain Carter’s Red Skull dead, how would her version of Infinity War and Endgame’s events proceed?
According to What If…? writer AC Bradley the series was at one point going to include a Spidey storyline that mirrored his animated TV show arc.
The original Spider-Man Animated Series included a storyline that involved Peter Parker transforming into a giant eight-legged Man-Spider.
The storyline ran parallel to the likes of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, or some similar werewolf media.
Talking about the story being axed, the writer said: “There were a couple of episodes that were just a little too dark.” (Via The Post Credit Podcast)
Bradley went on: “Spider-Man turns into a real spider, and that was just too dark and too body horror for their PG-13 [rating].”
Considering this story would have involved Tom Holland morphing into a giant creature, it’s plain to see why they didn’t follow it.
Marvel’s What If…? is available on Disney Plus now.
