Aussies blow golden opportunity against Kiwis

Australia is now sweating on the results of other matches after losing 14-12 to New Zealand in the men’s rugby sevens at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Aussies finished 1-2 in group play – behind New Zealand and Argentina – but the narrow loss means they are likely to still qualify for the quarterfinals as one of the third placed teams with the best points differential (+25).

But it was a huge missed opportunity from Tim Walsh’s side, who led 12-0 at halftime and failed to capitalise on a New Zealand yellow card.

Australia made a terrific start with former Wallabies star Samu Kerevi promoted to the run-on side and skinning Sione Molia for the game’s opening try.

The Kiwis simply couldn’t get their hands on the ball and Aussie captain Nick Malouf eventually broke through for the second try with a big step against some tiring defence.

But New Zealand made a perfect start to the second half, with veteran Dylan Collier crossing out wide.

Collier went from hero to zero as he was yellow carded for a clumsy challenge on an airborne Josh Turner.

But the Kiwis were ultra-impressive playing a man down, patiently holding the ball before Andrew Knewstubb snuck through a small gap to take the lead for his side.

Australian star Lachie Anderson was also forced from the field with injury as he clutched at his wrist.
