Are Easter eggs or chocolate bars cheaper? Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury’s prices co

Easter is almost upon us, and supermarket shelves are already stacked full of Easter treats.

But with the cost of living crisis continue to put a strain on finances, many families may be worried about how much buying Easter eggs will add to the cost of the weekly shop.

So, are Easter eggs cost effective? Or is it cheaper just to buy normal chocolate bars to treat your kids with instead?

We compared prices at Tesco, Asds and Sainsbury’s to find out.

Are Easter eggs or chocolate bars cheaper?

For our research, we compared the prices of Cadbury’s and Galaxy Easter eggs and chocolate bars – from Tesco, Aldi and Sainsbury’s and found that in all cases chocolate bars are much better value than Easter eggs.

Cadbury’s eggs

Sainsbury’s

At Sainsbury’s, a Cadbury Dairy Milk extra large Easter egg (515g) is £10, meaning you are paying £1.94 for every 100g of chocolate.

However, a 180g Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bar is £2.25, which is £1.25 per 100g, meaning that the chocolate bar is far cheaper than the Easter egg.

Tesco

At Tesco, the results were very similar.

A Cadbury Dairy Milk extra large Easter egg (515g) also costs £10 from Tesco, meaning that again you are paying £1.94 per 100g.

However, a 180g Dairy Milk chocolate bar is only £2 from Tesco, which works out at £1.11 per 100g.

Aldi

At Aldi, a 198g Cadbury Twirl Easter egg is £2.99, which is £1.51 per 100g.

A 95g Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bar however, is £1.17, which is £1.23 per 100g.

Galaxy eggs

The results were also the same for Galaxy Easter eggs.

Sainsbury’s

At Sainsbury’s a 206g Galaxy Milk Chocolate Enchanted Eggs Easter egg is £3.00, meaning you are paying £1.46 per 100g, whereas a 200g Galaxy milk chocolate bar is £2 (£1 per 100g).

Tesco

At Tesco a 310g Galaxy chocolate egg is £5.00 (£1.61 per 100g) while a 110g Galaxy milk chocolate bar is £1.50 (£1.36 per 100g).

At the time of writing, Aldi does not stock Galaxy chocolate bars but we expect that if it did, the results would follow the same pattern.

However, it is important to note that supermarkets may have discounts on Easter eggs leading up to the big day, which could of course mean that eggs end up being cheaper than non-discounted chocolate bars.

And if you don’t mind waiting a day or two, the price of chocolate eggs will plummet after Easter has passed, as supermarkets try to get rid of extra stock.
