The state’s Commissioner of School Education has introduced initiatives to improve the pass percentage and learning outcomes. The government has instructed the state schools to conduct special classes for three weeks to help the students struggling with the course.
Supporting the students
Talking to Education Times, Devananda Reddy, director, Andhra Pradesh Examinations Department, says, “The focus of these special classes is on improving the learning outcomes and pass percentage. The student shall not only pass the examination but also become a competent student who is well versed in the subjects.”
Explaining the steps taken to help students academically, Reddy says, “A sufficient number of subject-specific teachers and experts were appointed in schools. They have been teaching at least two subjects every day. They have also prepared school-wise plans and study schedules for students after identifying their weak areas. Besides these, for confidence-building among students, doubt-clearance sessions are being conducted.” To help the students, several residential schools have opened their hostels to accommodate students during holidays.
Overcoming major setbacks
The state identified 71 schools where all the students failed the board exam. The government directed the concerned officials to find out the reasons for the poor performance. The authorities have asked the teachers to prepare a timetable to help the students. Reddy says, “School principals were tasked with the preparation of specific plans, whereas subject-specific teachers were instructed to follow the plan scrupulously. The District Education Officers (DEOs) constantly monitored the implementation of the plan at these 71 schools and provided the necessary guidance and support.”
It was observed that the pass percentage in Mathematics is 80.26%, while it was low for the other six subjects. To aid students’ learning loss for the subject, Reddy says, “Teachers are instructed to adopt different teaching styles, create a variety of testing environments so that students are not forced to cram the formulas.
Divisions over grace marks
Quashing the demand of parents to provide grace marks, Reddy adds, “Government will award ‘divisions’ to the students passing the supplementary examinations instead of denoting ‘compartmental-passed’ on the final mark sheets.” Grace marks may not align with the government’s aim of assessing the skills, abilities and knowledge of the students.
