Andy Murray crashes out of Swiss Indoors Basel with straight-sets loss
Andy Murray crashed out in the second round of the Swiss Indoors as he was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3 6-2 on Thursday afternoon. The world No 49 had been hoping to boost his ranking before the end of the season and now has just one tournament left of 2022 after crashing out in Basel.
Murray and Bautista Agut were facing off for the sixth time in their careers and the second time this year after the Spaniard destroyed the three-time Major winner 6-0 6-1 in Doha earlier this year. It was the Brit who got off to a fast start this time around, breaking for a 2-1 lead after saving four break points in his opening service game.
But he wasn’t in front for long, as he hit his first double fault of the match to give the world No 22 an immediate break-back point and netted the ball to hand Bautista Agut the game. Murray then failed to capitalise on a break point chance at 3-4 and found himself broken in the very next game, giving the 34-year-old the opportunity to serve for the opener.
The sixth seed went 15-40 down but managed to fend off the former world No 1 to close out a rollercoaster first set 6-3, with Murray’s 19 unforced errors causing his misfortune in the opener. And Bautista Agut’s momentum continued into the second set as he broke Murray in the first game, winning five games in a row to take a set and 2-0 lead.
