Amazon shuts down a huge part of Kindle – and users are fuming

IF you like reading newspapers and magazines on your Kindle then Amazon’s latest change won’t be welcome news.

The retail giant has decided to shutdown its Kindle Newsstand feature for good.

Users have long been able to subscribe to their favourite newspapers and magazines to read on their Kindle device.

But Amazon stopped anyone from starting a new subscription on March 9.

People using the service already will continue to get their favourite publications until September 4.

But after that it’s over.

You’ll still be able to look through past editions but nothing new beyond that date.

And if you’ve paid for any issues due for release after September 4, you’ll get a pro-rated refund for it.

Understandably, some fans are disappointed by the news.

“Newsstand is the main reason I’ve been using Kindle…” one user wrote on Twitter.

“Now questioning whether to continue.”

In a statement to The Verge, Amazon said: “As part of our annual operating planning review process, we always look at each of our businesses and what we believe we should change.

“Following an assessment of our magazine and newspaper subscriptions and single-issue sales, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue these services.

“We don’t take these decisions lightly and are winding down these offerings in a phased manner over several months.

“We will continue to support customers, sellers and publishers during that time.”
