Alcaraz stuns Djokovic to win Wimbledon title

World No. 1 and reigning US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz came back from a set down to register a 1-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory against the huge favourite and defending champion Novak Djokovic in the “ultimate showdown” to win his maiden Wimbledon title.

The No. 1-ranked Alcaraz prevented Djokovic from what would have been a record-tying eighth title, and fifth in a row, at the grass-court tournament. Djokovic also was kept from claiming his 24th career major.

Instead of Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia, becoming the oldest male champion at Wimbledon in the Open era, Alcaraz, a 20-year-old from Spain, became the third-youngest. The age gap between the two was the widest in any men’s Slam final since 1974.

Though Alcaraz reached the final, not many tennis pundits gave him a chance to create a massive upset by beating Djokovic who was looking in impervious form, coming into the title contest.

Novak Djokovic won the fourth set of the Wimbledon final 6-3 against Carlos Alcaraz to take it to the decider. He won the first set 6-1 and Alcaraz won the second and third 7-6 (6), 6-1.

Alcaraz managed to break Djokovic’s serve to go 2-1 in the deciding final set. Alcaraz won the break with a backhand winner, while Djokovic looked very angry as he went on to slam his racquet on the side of the net while switching sides after the end of the Game. Though Djokovic tried to break-back, the young Spaniard remained calm under mind-boggling pressure and didn’t offer any freebies to the Serbian to emerge victorious.
