Alan Cumming shares awkward chat with mum over Miriam Margolyes jockstrap remark
Alan Cumming has revealed the awkward chat he had to have with his mum after Miriam Margolyes spoke out about his jockstrap on live TV – and it sounds like it was excruciatingly cringey.
On Wednesday’s edition of This Morning, Alan joined Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield to discuss his new memoir Baggage: Tales from a Fully Packed Life.
However, the actor ended up in hysterics when he was reminded of the time Miriam unexpectedly talked about his underwear on the ITV programme.
Alan and Miriam starred together in a three-part series set to be released on Channel 4 which will see them travel around Scotland together.
While filming, Miriam – known for her eccentric and hilarious remarks – heard that Alan wears a jockstrap, a fact that she promptly shared on This Morning in September this year.
After watching the clip back, Alan told Holly and Phillip through fits of laughter that his mum called him up after watching the programme, when she told him: ‘Miriam said on This Morning that Alan Cumming wears a jockstrap.’
‘I was like, why does my mother have to discover that by watching This Morning with you two?!’ he exclaimed as the co-hosts giggled.
‘And then you two going, “I don’t understand.” I said to her, “Miriam, you’ve got to stop saying that I don’t wear underwear.” A jockstrap is underwear.’
He then imitated the Harry Potter actor responding to him by saying: ‘I know darling, I just can’t grasp it.’
The Emma star explained that the whole jockstrap saga started when they were putting their mic packs on while filming their show, and he suggested attaching his to the strap of his jockstrap in lieu of a belt.
The minute Miriam overheard, Alan realised that this was ‘going to end badly’.
Alan added that Miriam asked him whether the jockstrap ‘goes up his crack’, with him having to point out that there’s a difference between a jockstrap and a thong or a dance belt.
‘You know what she’s like,’ he remarked. We sure do!
One This Morning viewer said that in their view, ‘even when Miriam isn’t actually on the show she’s still the funniest thing’.
‘Miriam Margoleaves is a living legend. Give her her own show,’ someone else said.
This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
