AICTE launches MOOC for Yoga to increase professionalism among yoga instructors and trainers – Times of India

The online courses will train amateur yoga learners to set up yoga studios and offer training to control anxiety disorders, mild physical ailments
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched online credit course in Yoga to bring professionalism to this sector. The council has introduced four SWAYAM Yoga online credit courses, which have been designed by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA) University, Bangalore.
These short-term courses are now available at the Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) platform for any graduates, diploma holders or yoga enthusiasts.
“Short-term online courses will help in learning the theoretical and practical aspects of yoga. Till now, more than 700 students from Yoga and Social Science background have enrolled for the four courses namely Yoga in concentration, Yoga in memory, Yoga in creativity, and Yoga in speaking skills. These courses will help in enhancing the concentration, memory, creativity and speaking skills that are the essential components of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). Besides helping the students who are stressed out, these courses are designed for those who want to work as yoga instructors and trainers,” says, Raghavendra Bhat, associate professor, Division of Yoga and Life Sciences, S-VYASA University.
The four courses carry four credit points spread over 16 weeks. The modules consist of 20-hour-long video lectures and reading material as the course includes both theory and practical components. Students are allowed to enrol for one or all four course as per their choice. The training will be imparted by teachers/course coordinators, who have done PhD in Yoga and philosophy. After completing the course, the students will have more employability.
“These courses give an edge to those who learn yoga as a hobby. They get certified as a professional trainer, who can find jobs in gyms, schools and colleges. Also, they can start yoga training institutes and studios, which are gaining demand in society,” says Bhat, highlighting the growing fad of personal yoga trainers hired by celebrities and sportspeople, who get decent remuneration. Yoga offers multiple health benefits if it is embraced as a lifestyle and not as an alternative treatment. Yoga helps in controlling PCOD, diabetes, thyroid and BP, besides controlling weight.
