Bhubaneswar: The state government will set up an Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Centre of Excellence (CoE) at Rama Devi Women’s University here. The university has signed a memorandum of understanding with IIT Bhubaneswar for the setting up of this centre.
Around Rs 8.7 crore will be spent on this CoE. Students from state universities and colleges can get a chance to learn and get training about newer technologies like AI and robotics.
Rama Devi Women’s University vice-chancellor Aparajita Chowdhury said the training will be provided to faculty members of her institution to run the CoE. Faculty members of affiliated colleges will also get training for this. The road map has been prepared for the CoE. “We will start the centre once the infrastructure is developed,” she added.
She said the state government will create the infrastructure of the university. There will be one classroom and a laboratory for teaching and training purposes. The government will provide different software for this. IIT Bhubaneswar will give technical support to the CoE.
IIT Bhubaneswar submitted this proposal before the Odisha government on February 9. This centre will create AI and robotics talent keeping the needs of industries in mind. Even the students will get better pay in this sector compared to conventional IT jobs and they can create their enterprises or startups in this field, said official sources.
Many organisations across India are facing an AI and robotics skill gap, with some facing an extreme shortage of niche skill sets, such as data scientists. Organisations are simultaneously investing in the acquisition of fresh talent and AI-skilling their existing workforce, said the proposal of IIT Bhubaneswar.
This CoE will help to increase the employability of the university graduates initially in the 100s but after 2-3 years in the 1000s. The current salary level will increase by 30 per cent to 50 per cent. It will become one of the innovation hubs around AI after 2-3 years, said the official sources.
The centre will have a combination of different AI accelerators and robotics setups. Students will get a chance for exposure to industries, and they will be exposed to application-based learning and multiple tools and technologies that are used in the industry with multiple platforms.
