NITI Aayog’s flagship initiative Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), which aims to promote innovative thinking among school students, is set to be integrated as a part of the CBSE school curriculum. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), which were earlier independent topics will now be synchronised in the selected chapters of each subject.
Under the pilot project, as many as 59 schools each having Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) at its campus are selected. In these schools, manuals are provided to enable the teachers to develop lesson plans by blending concepts of AI, IoT across subjects. The students will also get hands-on experience at labs.
Mapping of curricula across subjects
“The training content is prepared by the working group comprising experienced AI/ATL coaches, experts and specialised subject teachers within 8-11 months. Tinkering means being innovative to arrive at technology-enabled solutions. Our focus is to make ‘Tinkering’ a part of the formal pedagogy and connect the emerging technologies of AI, IoT with some main topics of English, Social Science, Geography, History, and Economics subjects,” says, Deepali Upadhyay, program director, NITI Aayog (AIM).
“A minimum of four chapters for each subject is mapped with AI, IoT activities and projects that students need to carry out in tinkering lab. It will provide the functional/practical basis for the knowledge gained through multiple disciplines taught to the students. Further, Language/Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) skill development also takes place,” adds Upadhyay.
Innovative implementations
The curriculum document for VI-X classes has been launched, while the heads and the principals attended the orientation workshops. They will work as ‘innovation leaders’ in their respective schools. “Apart from closely monitoring the effective implementation of the curriculum, the leaders will have to ensure that optimum use of available resources at ATLs for promoting the use of AI-IOT is recorded, leading to increased participation of students at tinkering labs,” says Upadhyay.
Alka Kapur, principal, Modern Public School calls it a technology revolution. The school is part of the pilot project and the teachers here are being equipped to use blended tools of AI, IoT to teach every student irrespective of subjects and streams in classrooms,” says Kapur. The integration of AI in subjects such as Maths, Hindi, Science, Social Science will be a game changer. “Starting from foundation classes, teachers are successfully using AR and VR tools/apps in their lesson plans for smooth learning integration among our students. Also, with integrated approach, numerous online AI activities including face, object, colour detection are conducted for students in our ATLs,” she adds.
Devyani Jaipuria, pro-Vice chairperson, DPS International, says “The AI, IoT technologies will smoothly convert verbal speech to sign language and vice versa. This will boost learning outcomes of students with disabilities as now teachers can use sensor-connected gloves to provide educational assistance and help students to carry out lab activities,” says Jaipuria.
