The opening half of tonight’s AFL grand final wasn’t without controversy with a Max Gawn shot on goal being called a behind despite replays hinting otherwise.
With the Demons leading by 11 points during the second quarter, Gawn was left stunned that his side’s lead wasn’t stretched out by a goal when the goal umpire deemed his shot from close to the boundary line, to be no good.
“Max is in disbelief still!” said Seven commentator Brian Taylor.
Once replays emerged of the ruckman’s shot on goal, it appeared incredibly tight, with Lions great Luke Hodge even admitting that he thought it should’ve been deemed a six-pointer.
“(Gawn is) not happy with that, I actually thought it was a goal too,” Hodge said.
“From that angle, it actually looks like … But the umpire was in a perfect position.”

A Twitter user who appeared to be in attendance shared a different angle of Gawn’s shot, which sparked plenty of debate.
Former Demon Tomas Bugg said he was left in “shock” that the decision wasn’t looked at by the ARC, the AFL’s goal-review system.
