Adebayo Akinfenwa’s response in strange back-and-forth with Man City boss Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has engaged in a curious back-and-forth with Wycombe Wanderers striker Adebayo Akinfenwa. Thankfully, it is only words of kindness that have been exchanged thus far, despite the Blues romping to a 6-1 victory over The Chairboys during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup action.

Wycombe took an unlikely lead through Brandon Hanlan which gave the travelling fans reason to celebrate early on.

However, City’s blend of youth and experience eventually clicked into gear, and a number of their heavyweights burst into life to notch six goals at the Etihad.

Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez were amongst those who ensured Guardiola’s side went into the hat for the fourth round.

It also means that their quite incredible run in the competition continues under the Spaniard, having not lost a Carabao Cup match since 2016.

The exchange is a curious one considering Guardiola and Akinfenwa are two figures who have spent careers at opposite ends of the spectrum, but the latter has become a cult figure due to his strength.

His scoring record is admirable too, although it is slowing down with age having notched just once in 35 outings last campaign.

His remarkable physique for a footballer has made him memorable in the eyes of fans, Guardiola being one of them, and although City felt his strength in flashes on Tuesday it was not enough to cause an upset.

Still, it marked a wholesome moment when City’s youngsters came out victorious and fans showed their appreciation for a well-known figure in England’s lower divisions.
