A Spider-Verse Hero’s Friendship Shows the Importance of New Perspectives
Though they were both members of the new Agents of Atlas, Silk and Luna Snow are very different people, but they share a strong friendship.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Silk #2, available now from Marvel.
When Jimmy Woo formed the new Agents of Atlas, he brought together talented young heroes from all around the globe and gave them the opportunity to work together to fight dangers that were too great for any one of them to tackle alone. One unlikely friendship that blossomed due to the Agents of Atlas was between members Silk and Luna Snow. Silk is a hero of New York with spider powers, while Luna is a famous Korean pop star with ice manipulation powers. They came together as members of Agents of Atlas to protect the world from threats such as fire demons, dragons, and corrupt businessmen but remained friends even after they both went their separate ways.
Because Silk and Luna lead such different lives, their friendship might seem strange at first. However, it is their differences that allow them to get along so well. Silk #2 (by Emily Kim, Takeshi Miyazawa, Ian Herring, and VC’s Ariana Maher) explored the dynamic between these two characters and showed how their diverging perspectives enable them to be better friends with each other.
In Silk #2, Luna texted Silk to inform her that she was playing a nearby show later that night and emailed her two tickets. Silk went to the show, bringing along a man who had asked her on a date. However, strange shadowy creatures attacked Luna onstage, and Silk teamed up with her friend to defeat them. Afterward, Silk and Luna went backstage and catch up with each other. Silk talked about the villain she’s tracking down, and Luna talked about the tour she is currently on.
The differences between Silk and Luna are put on stark display in this issue. Luna performs at sold-out shows every night, while Silk writes newspaper articles and investigates the mystery of the break-in at the museum. While Luna has millions of followers on social media, Silk can barely figure out how to get her phone to stop going off. Luna is very comfortable at social events, while Silk is much more awkward. The biggest thing they have in common is that they are both excellent at fighting bad guys.
Silk and Luna have very different perspectives, but these differences actually help to strengthen their friendship instead of weakening it. Although Silk was a little star-struck when she first met Luna, her overall indifference to concepts like fame and popularity helps her be a better friend to Luna. As an internationally beloved pop star, Luna no doubt encounters plenty of people who only care about her because she is famous, but Silk is not one of those people. She has gotten to know Luna on a personal level thanks to their time as Agents of Atlas, and she likes Luna for who she is.
Since Silk spent ten years of her life trapped in a bunker by herself with no one to talk to, she can be a bit awkward in social situations. She spends a lot of her downtime with her brother in their shared apartment, but Silk #2 shows that she has been trying to push herself to try new experiences and learn new skills. Luna helps with this by inviting her to her concert. Because Luna gave her two tickets to the concert, Silk goes on a date for the first time in a while. She does something more social that is out of her comfort zone. Although the date didn’t end well, it still counts for something that she took some steps to push herself, with Luna’s help.
Silk and Luna live in different countries and lead busy lives, so they aren’t always able to see each other often. However, their friendship remains strong. Their fundamentally different lives help them share new perspectives with each other and allow them to push each other to be better.
