A lecture at the Guild Hall – Olive Jenkins, City of London Freemens
It all began when students at City of London Freemens sixth form were offered the opportunity to visit the Guild Hall in London on Tuesday 4th October to see Lord Hodge, the Deputy Head of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, give a lecture.
Upon arriving at the Guild Hall, we were able to look at all of the art collected in this historic place, seeing historical artifacts and paintings such as ‘The Execution of Lady Jane Grey’ (the finished study for the large picture by Paul Delaroche.) This was an incredible opportunity to have, as some of the paintings are very well-known globally. This time was followed by the lecture itself, which was very interesting, featuring a variety of topics but particularly concerning commercial law. I feel lots of the specific supreme court jargon was beyond me and the content of much of the lecture was fitted to someone who had specifically studied law; however, because it was not in a school-based setting and was very tailored to the intellectual audience, this created an atmosphere of a true ‘look behind the curtain’ as to what a career in law is really like. It was therefore very engaging and ideal as a lecture for introducing us to law not only as a profession and a subject, but also as a culture.
The networking aspect of the evening followed, with us meet people like the Chief Commoner, Simon Duckworth, which added to the academic enrichment of the evening. It also gave us as school students the opportunity to meet very knowledgeable and senior people we would otherwise not meet, as well the ability to meet university students going into law.
This emersion into law was a priceless opportunity offered to people as young as 16. Not only was the talk itself and the company that came along with it impressive, but the Guild Hall was also an incredible backdrop to this evening as the building, with 800 years of history, added an impressive grandeur.
Thus concluded a thoroughly interesting and enriching evening that left us with a clearer picture of the realities of working in the legal profession which for me was contrary to the popular contemporary representations I had seen. We were exposed to all different types of people within the world of law and could see more clearly for ourselves where a path in law might take us.
