The War for Earth-3 is over, and a major fixture from the DCEU has gained their own Justice League roster to do with as they please.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for War for Earth-3 #2, now on sale from DC Comics.
Amanda Waller has long been one of DC’s most important commanders, operating from behind the scenes for years. But her latest salvo has turned against an entire universe, and it may have given her a greater advantage than she’s ever had before.
War for Earth-3 #2 (by Robbie Thompson, Dennis Hopeless, Kieran McKeown, Dexter Vines, Ariel Olivetti, Julio Ferreira, Brent Peeples, Matt Herms, and Simon Bowland) cements Waller as the winner of the conflict – and it gives her a Justice League to command.
War for Earth-3 pitted the Suicide Squad and the Crime Syndicate against one another, with Waller’s true motivations revealed to be taking control of Earth-3 and turning it into a new base of operations. Her attempts to work with Ultraman initially were successful, at least until chaos set in and Rick Flagg’s attempts to discredit enraged the evil Superman. Ultimately, alongside the Teen Titans and two different versions of the Suicide Squad, Waller was able to work with the Crime Syndicate members to ensure the capture of Ultraman within the Phantom Zone. While most of Earth-1’s heroes and anti-heroes return to their home, Waller remained behind to command her new team, which has effectively become the Justice League of this world.
Amanda Waller’s League is composed of former Crime Syndicate members Superwoman, Power Ring, and Johnny Quick, along with the Earth-3 variant of Black Canary known as Black Siren. Her version of Etrigan the Demon provides some mystical strength to the roster, alongside Nocturna. Finally, the Man of Steel clone Match steps up and embraces his connection to the most well-known Kryptonian by donning a black version of the classic Superman costume. It’s an impressive roster, and with Earth-3 more or less separated from the rest of the multiverse, Waller will be able to command the team however she sees fit. It’s effectively her most powerful Suicide Squad yet, and could make the heroes of Earth-3 a serious wild card going forward. This also seems to mark the end of Waller’s longstanding conflict with the mainstream Justice League.
Amanda Waller has had plenty of interactions with the Justice League over the years and has attempted to use her authority against them. In the Post-Crisis DC Universe, her confrontations with Batman became the stuff of legend, especially after the League confronted the Squad directly. In the Post-Flashpoint universe, the Squad and the Justice League ended up in a genuine throwdown thanks to the machinations of Maxwell Lord. Waller has been gathering her forces since, positioning herself as a respectable commander, and she now has entire team of powerhouse heroes at her disposal.
It’s a fun turn for Waller, and with this degree of power at her command, she could become a serious problem for anyone, especially if she were to show up in the middle of an event like Dark Crisis. This solidifies her as the ultimate winner of the War for Earth-3 and grants her a potentially lethal and highly unpredictable version of DC’s greatest heroes.
