A Copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man’s First Appearance, Just Sold for $3 Million

A near-mint copy of Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantast #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, sells for $3.6 million.

Marvel Comics’ Amazing Fantasy #15 — the first appearance of Peter Parker/Spider-Man — just sold for a record-breaking amount.

Considered to be the best-known copy of the 1962 issue with a 9.6 CGC rating, Amazing Fantasy #15 sold for $3.6 million. “What better book to break the record than the debut of Marvel’s most beloved character, Spider-Man?” Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen said. “Amazing Fantasy No. 15 is the Action Comics No. 1 or Detective Comics No. 27 of the next generation. I’m honored to have been a part of the most important comic book sale to date. In my 20 years at Heritage, to bring the most expensive book to market has been the pinnacle of my career.”

Prior to Amazing Fantasy #15, the world record for a comic book sale belonged to DC’s Action Comics #1 — the first appearance of Superman — which sold for $3.25 million. However, the highest previous sale for Amazing Fantasy #15 was a 9.4 copy that went for just $795,000.

Written by Stan Lee with art by Steve Ditko, colors by Stan Golberg and letters by Artie Simek, Amazing Fantasy #15 featured four stories. The first — “Spider-Man!” — introduced Marvel readers to Peter Parker, who’d go on to become one of the company’s most popular characters.
