Wealdstone earn slender win over Dagenham & Redbridge

Wealdstone earned the National League bragging rights over Dagenham & Redbridge and climbed above them in the table at Grosvenor Vale.

Daggers boss Daryl McMahon made three changes to his starting line-up from the home defeat against Yeovil, as Manny Onariase, Elliott Johnson and Paul McCallum came in for the suspended Harry Phipps, injured Josh Hare and departed Josh Walker respectively.

But only five minutes had been played when Ashley Charles put the hosts in front with a calm finish into the bottom corner after Brooklyn Ilunga had weaved his way through to tee him up.

Olufela Olomola went close to a second soon after, firing just wide, while Mo Sagaf flashed a shot wide on 13 minutes, as Daggers tried to get themselves into the game.

Jack Cook forced Elliot Justham to make a good save after a powerful effort from the edge of the box, while Sagaf was then denied by a superb Sam Howes save before the half-hour mark.

But Johnson was shown a yellow card on 36 minutes and Daggers went close in stoppage time when captain Matt Robinson tried his luck from 20 yards and Howes palmed the ball out to Junior Morias, who fired into the side netting.

Omar Mussa replaced Sagaf during the break for Daggers, who saw Morias force Howes into action early in the second half.

And Mussa then drew a foul from Charlie Barker, who was booked, before Morias saw his shot come back off the crossbar just before the hour and Howes denied Sam Ling on 63 minutes.

Stones boss Stuart Maynard replaced Olomola and Corie Andrews with Nathan Ferguson and Tarryn Allarakhia midway through the half, while Daggers saw Angelo Balanta make his return from a lengthy absence in place of Onariase.

And Mussa had his name taken before Balanta forced Howe into a pair of saves on 79 minutes, with Wealdstone’s Max Kretzschmar and Tarrelle Whittaker also shown yellow cards in the closing stages.

Victory leaves Stones in 10th place, outside the play-off places on goal difference, with Daggers one spot and two points below them with a game in hand.
