TL;DR

  • We now have an idea of what the Android 12 Wallpaper & Style app will look like on Pixel phones.
  • As one would expect, the new aesthetics match those of Android 12, with rounded icons and color matching.
  • There’s also a new color picker that allows you to pick “Basic Colors” in place of the context-aware colors the OS chooses for you.

The biggest difference between Android 12 and previous versions of the operating system is how it looks. For the first time in years, Google has wildly revamped the overall aesthetic of Android. It’s also introduced some cool new ways to customize its look and feel.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest changes simply bring the overall look of the app in line with Android 12 itself. There are a few new features, though.

Android 12 Wallpaper & Style app redesign

The first thing you’ll notice is how much this app now looks like other aspects of Android 12. The buttons are all rounded and match the aesthetic of the new Quick Tiles. Icons and toggles also see subtle changes.

The biggest feature change is the introduction of a new color picker section called “Basic Colors.” This exists as a way for users to override the context-aware colors automatically chosen by Android 12. These colors come from your installed wallpaper. If for whatever reason, you didn’t want your phone’s color scheme to match your background, you can override that with some basic color choices.

The four basic colors are blue, green, purple, and brown-ish orange. When you swap to dark mode, though, the Android 12 Wallpaper & Style app changes these colors to pastel versions.

Do note that the changes you make in this section also affect icons. However, they don’t affect all icons and those in the app drawer don’t change. It’s likely this is a bug.

Other than that, the features all appear to be the same here. The layout just looks a lot nicer and will fit right in with the rest of Android 12.
