Jonathan Bailey and Taron Egerton appeared on Friday’s The One Show to discuss their upcoming play and paid tribute to Helen McCrory who died last year aged 52.

McCrory, who was best known for her role as Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, as well as having an illustrious stage career, died of breast cancer in April 2021.

The actress was adored by her fellow stars in the business, with the news coming as a shock to the world of entertainment and beyond.

Appearing on The One Show on Friday, actors Egerton and Bailey shared memories of working with the late actress as they promoted their upcoming London play.

Egerton, 32, said: ‘I did my first job with Helen at the National Theatre when I was 22.

‘She was fiercely talented, awe-inspiringly talented, but kind, fun, funny, warm and incredibly generous.

‘I remember sharing scenes with her and just feeling like I was getting better through working with her. She was a really generous actor and a lovely person and a real loss to our industry.’

Bailey, who said he was seven when he acted with McCrory, added: ‘If anyone was lucky enough to see her on stage, she was like an animal, she always had a naughty twinkle in her eye.

‘I know a lot of people who were very close to her and I think it is a real loss, what an amazing woman.’

McCrory had kept her diagnosis secret, and very few people knew of her illness before her death last year.

The acting pair were announced to star opposite together last year and will appear at the Ambassadors Theatre in London from 5 March – 4 June 2022.

The title of the play in question is ‘C**k’, a play originally written by Mike Bartlett in 2009, which the hosts very much weren’t allowed to share.

‘To find out what it’s called you might have to Google The Ambassadors Theatre,’ Bailey teased.

Shortly afterwards, host Ronan Keating said: ‘Jonathan as you said, it’s got a bit of a cheeky title which we won’t be mentioning tonight.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
