In one of the steps to make the dancefloor more accessible to Rose, who is deaf, contestants and dancers have been asked not to applaud which the EastEnders actress performs in order for her to ‘feel the vibrations’ of the music.
Rose and her professional partner Giovanni Pernice made a hugely promising start to the series, scoring a perfect 40 out of 40 during Saturday’s Halloween-themed special.
Now, Shirley has spoken about her on Good Morning Britain, explaining how the rule helps her as her other senses are ‘really heightened’.
‘Nobody’s allowed to clap whilst she’s dancing so she can feel the vibrations of the floor,’ the head judge revealed on the ITV programme.
‘So the music’s just a hair louder. She’s got that beautiful feelings of vibrations, so her other senses are really really heightened.’
Shirley was also full of praise for Giovanni for his ‘immaculate job’ of training Rose.
‘I think Giovanni, first of all, has done an absolutely immaculate job. We have a translator just off to our left that’s helping her understand what’s going on and the criticisms and the critiques,’ she said.
It comes after Giovanni celebrated his history-making perfect score with Rose from Saturday night’s show, dubbing it ‘one of the most rewarding moments of my career’.
The pair earned four 10s from judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke, marking the earliest a couple has ever achieved a perfect score on the BBC One series.
This year, Rose became the first Deaf celebrity ever to compete on Strictly Come Dancing.
During their performance in week five, Rose and Giovanni were showered with praise for their powerful Viennese Waltz, which incorporated sign language into the choreography.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
