The UK’s favourite Christmas foods have some seriously confusing choices
It’s festive food time, which means the return of brie, turkey, and cranberry – among other things…
We thought everyone agreed that Brussels sprouts are terrible, but apparently not.
Tech retailer Currys surveyed the nation, asking them to pick their favourite Christmas foods, drinks, and treats, and found that Brussels sprouts are the third favourite trimming on average.
The top choices might surprise you, because they certainly sparked debate at Metro HQ.
Meats and centerpieces
The traditional roast Turkey reigns as the favourite Christmas centrepiece across the UK – over half say this is the main that will be featuring on the big day.
In joint second place, 22% of Brits opt for roast beef or roast chicken instead. If you think turkey is dry, you may as well.
Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of Brits will be opting for vegetarian mains – such as stuffed mushrooms, nut roast and veggie wellington. So far, so normal.
Trimmings and condiments
Naturally, roast potatoes come first. A quarter say they’re ‘non-negotiable’.
In second place, it’s pigs in blankets (obviously), followed by the unexpected choice of Brussels sprouts – 10% say its the trimming they look forward to the most.
Maybe those people see it as a part of tradition, rather than something to enjoy…
As for condiments, 28% choose cranberry sauce, and 16% go for mint sauce instead, which typically goes with roast lamb, so is another odd choice.
Shockingly, only 44% of people said they want gravy (madness!). It seems like the most basic condiment to have with any roast, but over a half of people won’t bother, according to this survey.
Desserts and drinks
One for mature palettes, Christmas pudding is still the favourite dessert for 26% of Brits.
Mince pies come in next, and a cheese board is loved as an alternative by those who don’t have a sweet tooth.
When it comes to drinks, wine ranks top by 22% of Brits, especially with mulled wine being an option. 15% fancy a Baileys, and 12% do Champagne or prosecco.
For 10% of Brits, the first glass of booze is poured as soon as breakfast. Responsible drinking seems to have gone out the window there, but the majority wait until lunch to get on it.
